Too tight

Myth #4:  “A house has gotta breathe”

Air-to-Air Heat Exchanger

Truth:  Oooops… this one is TRUE, homes do need to breathe BUT they don’t have to leak.  The big difference in a very tight, efficient home is that instead of depending on leakage for fresh air it uses mechanical ventilation.  In both Deep Energy Retrofits and High Efficiency New Construction a air-to-air heat exchanger is used to provide fresh indoor air and reuse the heat already paid for.

Yes, the fan in the exchanger uses electricity (about 7 cents per day), but, recycling the heat from the outgoing air into warming up the incoming fresh air saves about $2 per day of heating costs and keeps the indoor air consistently fresh.

That’s efficient, cost effective, and healthy!
